Progression and Delivery

At Hambridge Primary School, Maths lessons are designed to engage children actively, providing varied learning opportunities to encourage participation and a deeper understanding. Lessons are structured to begin with a warm-up activity, which revisits prior learning, addresses misconceptions, and elicits existing knowledge. Learning objectives are explicitly shared, so pupils understand the relevance and purpose of their learning. Lessons incorporate fluency in various forms, as well as reasoning and problem-solving tasks, allowing children to progress through these areas for a comprehensive and challenging learning experience.

Maths is taught for at least one hour a day, four times a week. White Rose Hub Maths resources support our planning, ensuring structured and clear progression across year groups. Each lesson follows a consistent approach: starting with a review of prior learning, then modeling new concepts through varied fluency exercises. Problem-solving and reasoning questions are woven into the lesson to reinforce and deepen understanding. Concrete, pictorial, and abstract methods are used throughout to ensure students have a well-rounded conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In the Early Years, children are given opportunities to explore maths through songs, counting, and independent activities both indoors and outdoors. In the Foundation Stage, children complete personalised book work twice a week, focusing on key mathematical concepts from the EYFS curriculum.

Fluency and Key Number Facts
From the beginning, we ensure that children can recall key number facts fluently. Before teaching multiplication facts, children in Year 1 learn number pairs up to 10 and 20, while Foundation Stage focuses on number pairs to five. From Year 2 to Year 4, multiplication facts are explicitly taught and tracked, addressing any gaps in learning. If necessary, this teaching continues into Years 5 and 6 to ensure a solid grasp of essential skills, which are crucial for success in Upper Key Stage 2.

Calculation Skills
Calculation is taught explicitly each year, using objectives from the National Curriculum. Each year group builds upon the previous year's methods, ensuring a clear progression of skills. Arithmetic is taught daily to help children retain key calculation skills and achieve fluency. Knowledge and skills are revisited regularly, enabling students to apply methods consistently throughout their time at Hambridge Primary School.

Problem-Solving and Reasoning
Promoting problem-solving and reasoning skills is an essential aspect of our Maths curriculum. Every lesson includes opportunities for students to apply their fluency skills through problem-solving and reasoning tasks. In reasoning activities, pupils follow lines of enquiry, make predictions, and develop arguments for their answers. They learn to explain and justify their thinking using precise mathematical language, fostering both critical thinking and communication skills.

SOLVE IT! - children know as their problem solving tasks.

EXPLAIN IT! - children know as their reasoning tasks.

Teaching for Mastery
Since 2023, we have been part of the Teaching for Mastery workgroup with the Boolean Maths Hub. This initiative focuses on ensuring that every pupil achieves a deep understanding of key concepts before moving on to more complex material. The mastery approach promotes a culture of high expectations and supports students in gaining confidence and fluency with mathematical ideas.

Tracking and Assessment
Mathematics progress is tracked each term through a combination of formative and summative teacher assessments. Pupils are assessed against the National Curriculum expectations for their year group. Progress is reviewed in Pupil Progress Meetings each term, where target pupils are identified and their needs are addressed through tailored plans. Children’s recall and retention of key concepts are continually assessed to ensure no gaps remain in their learning.

Intervention
Interventions in Maths are used when children require additional support to retain and recall key concepts. These interventions may focus on reinforcing basic number facts, such as times tables and number bonds, or addressing specific areas where pupils need further development. Interventions are designed to help pupils secure a deep understanding of each year's content before moving on to the next level, ensuring that no child is left behind.
