Reading

Reading is at the Heart of our Curriculum

We firmly believe that at Hambridge Primary School, if we support pupils in establishing a love for reading and expose them to high quality and carefully chosen texts, pupils will thrive and reach their full potential.

It is our intention to immerse pupils in the wonders of quality texts and to instil a love for reading, a passion for discovery and a confidence to explore their imagination through our Book-Led curriculum.

Our aim is to promote and instill a love for reading, writing and high-quality literature into pupils at all ages and ensure that every child becomes a reader, a writer and confident speaker by the time they leave Hambridge Primary School. We value the importance of reading to supplement writing, providing a purpose and a context to writing.

Reading Across the Curriculum

The children also read a range of non-fiction texts and extracts in other subjects - Science, History, Geography, RE and of course the quality texts that we use in our writing lessons.

Children have many opportunities to read aloud throughout the school day and also read with a teacher or teaching assistant regularly during the week.

Reading at Home

Each child is given a reading record that goes home with them each night. Ideally, we would like to see that children are reading with somebody else: a parent, a grandparent or an older brother or sister. When they read parents should make a note in the reading record showing how many pages they have read and are encouraged to write a comment.

In Bramley and Liberty (Years 4 - 6), we encourage these children to continue to read with others each evening and discuss what they have read. They are encouraged to write their own comment in their reading record.

Reading Events

Scholastic Book Fair

Each year we hold a Scholastic Book Fair in school. Parents are encouraged to take their children along to the book fair and browse and purchase the books on offer. A percentage of the money raised is given to the school. Last year we were able to spend the commission on Whole Class Reading texts.

World Book Day

Each year we celebrate World Book Day. We celebrate the day with different themes each year.
