Welcome to the Summer Term – Year 5/6

Welcome back! We hope you have all had a restful break and are ready for an exciting and busy summer term.

The class will be taught by Miss Parsons from Monday to Thursday and Mrs Hall on Fridays, with support from Mrs Brandt.

This term is packed with engaging learning across the curriculum. In maths, we will begin with algebra before moving on to revisiting key topics, learning about ratio and applying our skills through a range of mathematical challenges.

In English, our writing will be based on the text Holes, where children will explore a range of writing opportunities inspired by the story.

In geography, we will be focusing on coasts, answering our enquiry question: How have coastlines changed? In history, we will study a non-European society, exploring the Kingdom of Benin. We will investigate the question: Why did the Kingdom of Benin wax and wane? This will include learning about the brilliance of Benin craftspeople and guilds, the growth of trade with Europe, and the multiple causes behind its decline.

In DT, the children will develop their cooking skills, focusing on boiling and frying. In art, they will explore sculpture, drawing inspiration from Benin artwork.

In Religion and Worldviews, we will analyse census data from Somerset to understand what it tells us about religion and belief in our local area.

In PE, children will take part in athletics and dodgeball during the first half of term, before moving on to tennis and rounders after half term.

A key date for the term is Year 6 SATs week, beginning Monday 11th May. Following this, we will begin preparations for our end-of-year performance, Liberty, which is always a highlight of the Year 6 experience.

We are looking forward to a fantastic term ahead.
